One of the most significant uses of flowers in fashion this week has been Junya Watanabe’s Spring-Summer 09 collection. In a move towards ethnicity (the African practice of carrying items on one’s head), authenticity (African prints, jeans, gingham, eyelet) and environmentalism (flowers, hay, birdsong) the show was a very fresh vision of natural beauty. The girls actually seemed proud of, rather than burdened by, their headgear, which was a mix of cut and dried flowers. I particularly like the use of fabric wrapped around the bouquets, which offers new concepts in bouquet construction to florists…

It must feel like a field on one’s head…
